“Well structured with clear focus on reducing the impacts of flooding and long term solutions for Bangladesh. A clear balance between hard and soft engineering strategies is evident. Practical solutions are strong and some very memorable, quirky and relevant case studies are used.“

Susan Argent, Redland High School

This is the second of two programmes produced by Pumpkin Interactive about Bangladesh and is suitable for post 16 and GCSE courses.

The judges felt this DVD would bring this frequently-used case study up to date. It emphasises contemporary thinking about hazard events, and personal accounts help explain the physical and human causes of flooding, including local and regional factors as well as climate change. The video includes a range of creative flood management strategies and NGO projects.

The judges felt the DVD, which contains high-quality footage interspersed with maps and graphics, was easy to use and enhanced by comprehensive teacher guidance notes (available in both pdf and word formats). The range of activities for students to complete before, during and after watching the video allow them to discuss the issues and look to the future of Bangladesh. The video script is also included on the DVD

Citation, Geographical Association Publishers' Awards 2011, Highly commended

The two new DVDs, Flooding in Bangladesh and Tropical Storms: Cyclone Alia are excellent, relevant and topical. The teaching resources mean teachers do not have to spend time developing their own material. I particularly liked the flooding one because I can visualise how I would use the footage and the teaching materials with different age groups.

I wish there had been packages of this high quality available when I was teaching. Bob Digby is a well-respected geographer with a track record for innovation and so his support material goes down well. The inclusion of word versions of the student activities are much appreciated, as teachers say they are able to edit these to customise the material to make it more suitable for their teaching groups.

former principal examiner and former Head of Geography, Finham Park School
