Pumpkin Textile DVD endorsed by Edexcel

A further Pumpkin resource has been endorsed by Edexcel for use with Edexcel's GCSE: D&T: Textiles Technology.

Textiles: Eco-Design” looks at how the textile industry is rising to the challenge of reducing the environmental impact of their products through eco-design. The resource is well matched to the sustainability aspects of the specification. It also encourages learners to consider the development of a product and how it can be continually improved upon.  The DVD also provides detailed worksheets of particular benefit for higher achieving candidates requiring extension activities.

A second title: “Textiles: Industrial Finishing Processes” has been added to Edexcel's recommended resources list.  It looks at the range of chemical and physical finishes now available and how their application is creating ever more technical materials.

Edexcel endorse Pumpkin's geography DVDs

Edexcel has endorsed two further Pumpkin Geography DVDs.

With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, its fantastic news that Edexcel has endorsed Pumpkin's educational resource: Aiming For Gold: the London 2012 Olympics for the Edexcel GCSE Geography specifications A and B, as well as for Edexcel GCE Geography.

The DVD is a resource bank of video clips, interactive maps, student activities and teachers' notes. It explores to what extent the event will help regenerate London's East End.  Students are given a mission and as journalists discover why cities bid to host mega sporting events and why London won.  They investigate the challenges of staging the games, design a layout and compare it to the real Olympic Park designs.  They then evaluate how the games will benefit the area socially, environmentally and economically.

The second Pumpkin DVD to receive endorsement is Bio-Diversity Under Threat: the Sundarbans and the Bengal Tiger. This title has been endorsed for Edexcel GCSE Geography specification B, with particular relevance to the topics: Biodiversity under Threat and Oceans on the Edge. It has also been endorsed for Edexcel GCE geography.  This DVD also deals with development issues as well and so is useful in a more broader sense than for just bio-diversity.

The DVD is a resource bank of video clips, interactive maps, student activities and teachers' notes.  It looks at why Bangladesh's Sundarban mangroves are so important; as a bio-diversity hotspot, as a carbon bank and as protection against the impacts of tropical cyclones.  It examines the threats, including climate change, shrimp farming, poaching and tiger killings.  It then explores how they can be sustainably managed and by whom.  Case studies include; a tiger conservation project, eco-tourism and government initiatives to control resource exploitation.

Award winning Pumpkin

Pumpkin has scooped two awards this year for their geography DVD resources.

"Flooding in Bangladesh” has received a Highly Commended in the Geographical Association Publishers' Awards 2011

Citation, Geographical Association Publishers' Awards 2011, Highly commended

This is the second of two programmes produced by Pumpkin Interactive about Bangladesh and is suitable for post 16 and GCSE courses.

The judges felt this DVD would bring this frequently-used case study up to date. It emphasises contemporary thinking about hazard events, and personal accounts help explain the physical and human causes of flooding, including local and regional factors as well as climate change. The video includes a range of creative flood management strategies and NGO projects.

The judges felt the DVD, which contains high-quality footage interspersed with maps and graphics, was easy to use and enhanced by comprehensive teacher guidance notes (available in both pdf and word formats). The range of activities for students to complete before, during and after watching the video allow them to discuss the issues and look to the future of Bangladesh. The video script is also included on the DVD

Our second award is for Pumpkin's  “Interactive Aiming For Gold” resource pack which was a finalist in the Bett Awards 2011, Tools for Teaching and Learning category.

Bett Awards 2011, Judges Comments

The judges liked the way it uses a topical focal point – the Olympics – as a central cross- curricular theme. A large number of subjects are integrated, including business. It was appropriate to a variety of ability levels.

They liked the way that role-play was possible in a real event/in real time: to be involved as organiser, promoter, journalist, etc.

It was full of really useful material, especially video. As it could be used across the key stages, it was seen as good value.

They liked the way it promoted collaboration.

Edexcel Endorsement

Edexcel endorse two more of Pumpkin's geography resources.

"Issues in Globalisation: How Fair is Fashion?" and "Issues in Globalisation: Environmental Impacts and Sustainability" have been endorsed by Edexcel for both their Geography GCSE A and B specifications as well as for their GCE Geography Specifications.

These titles provide fantastic case study material to help with two of the toughest topics at GCSE (as identified by Edexcel in their recent survey of over 1,000 students), namely; “identifying the changing patterns of global economic development” and “understanding how globalisation affects at a local scale, for example industry and employment”.

This follows on from the success of previous Pumpkin geography titles that have already been endorsed by Edexcel for use with their Geography GCSE and GCE specifications.
